A pillar of Calgary’s tennis community
In the heart of Calgary’s tennis scene stands Tibor “Tibi” Ribi—a 20-year member of Aforza and an enduring figure in the city’s sports community. Tibi has earned a reputation not only for his competitive prowess on the court but also for his dedication to cultivating camaraderie and fostering a welcoming environment for newcomers and seasoned players alike.
For Tibi, tennis was a journey that began with the encouragement of his wife. Although she initially had the upper hand in their games, he quickly grew passionate about the sport, both for the competitive challenge and the fitness it provided. “I got into the sport to stay in shape and enjoy competing against others but also to have fun socially,” Tibi reflects. The combination of athleticism and fellowship struck a chord, and soon, Tibi was playing five to six times a week, enjoying post-match conversations and forming friendships with fellow club members.
As a fan of tennis’ “Big 3” legends—Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic—Tibi brings an aggressive style to the game, relying on fast volleys and powerful overheads to put opponents on their heels. He plays with a Head Speed racquet and Adidas Barricades, a choice born of hard-learned lessons in comfort after a bout with plantar fasciitis from the wrong size shoe. “Now I stick with the famous Barricades,” he says.
Tibi’s dedication to Aforza extends beyond personal play; he has captained the club’s 5.0 interclub team, investing time and energy into guiding new players and building a cohesive team. His leadership has earned him the respect of his peers, who recognize his selfless approach. Doug Kozak, front desk manager, notes, “Tibi has been integral in introducing some of the younger adults and new players into interclub. He’s always available to hit with a new player or member, providing them with a warm introduction to the club.” Sonia Bernal, tennis manager and coach, adds, “Tibi is always very friendly with all members and likes to participate in many of the social events that we run at the club.”
As a devoted family man, Tibi has also shared his love of tennis with his daughter, Bianca. Her early years at Aforza, participating in the junior program and being coached by the club’s seasoned instructors, have helped her develop her own athletic path. Tibi fondly recalls one of his proudest moments: winning the 4.0 mixed doubles tournament when Bianca was just 10 years old.
Among Tibi’s most treasured memories is his victory in the Western Canadian Championships, held at Aforza. “The club championships each year are a highlight,” he shares, “but winning my age group in that tournament was special.” While Tibi enjoys the victories, he is equally grateful for the friendships and sense of community that Aforza offers.
Tibi’s approach to tennis balances competitiveness with an easy-going spirit. “As much as we all want to win,” he says, “the most important thing is to bring your best effort forward and just enjoy the results.”
Off the court, Tibi leads a vibrant personal and professional life. He organizes events that spotlight leaders from various fields, encouraging conversations around work, life and faith. Whether he’s
orchestrating engaging talks, supporting new players or offering encouragement to teammates, Tibi’s influence extends well beyond Aforza’s courts.
Even through setbacks—most recently a knee injury that kept him out of play for several months—Tibi’s passion for tennis remains positive. He hopes to be back in full swing soon, picking up where he left off: rallying alongside Aforza’s finest, recruiting fresh faces to the club and relishing the thrill of a well-placed volley.
His loyalty, camaraderie and genuine warmth have made him a beacon of Aforza’s community values. As owner Jeff Spiers puts it, “Tibi is well-liked by everyone at the club, and he’s a very good player.” Fellow member, Ivana Stakic, echoes the same, “Tibi is such a friendly, positive and kind person, always a pleasure to play with.” Tibi has truly embodied Aforza’s spirit—whether it’s on the court, sharing a post-match meal with friends or simply stopping by the front desk for a chat.
Tibi Ribi’s legacy at Aforza is one of sportsmanship, friendship and the tireless dedication of a man who not only loves the game but also the community it brings together. Thank you, Tibi, for being a part of our Aforza family.
